Newborn Photoshoots for Families with Toddlers: Tips, Tricks, and What to Expect

Newborn Photoshoot with a Toddler – What You Need to Know

Welcoming a newborn into your family is a magical experience, and capturing those first few days and weeks is something you’ll treasure forever. But when you have a toddler in the mix, the idea of a newborn photoshoot can feel a little overwhelming! Between the diaper changes, toddler tantrums, and adjusting to life with a new baby, how do you make sure the photoshoot goes smoothly?

As a photographer who specializes in capturing the beautiful chaos of young families, I understand that your toddler’s energy and your newborn’s sleepy moments create a dynamic that requires a little extra planning. The good news is that, with the right preparation and mindset, your newborn photoshoot can be a fun, relaxed, and memorable experience for your entire family.

In this blog, I’m going to walk you through what to expect during a newborn photoshoot with a toddler, offer tips on preparing for the session, and share ways to get beautiful, natural shots of your growing family.

1. Why It’s Worth Doing a Newborn Photoshoot with a Toddler

You may be wondering if it’s really necessary to schedule a newborn photoshoot while juggling the needs of a toddler. The answer is YES! Here’s why:

  • Capture the Early Days of Your Growing Family: The first few days and weeks of your newborn’s life are fleeting, and your toddler’s first interactions with their sibling are precious moments you won’t want to forget. These moments are often family favorites, and just so so precious!
  • Celebrate the Transition: Becoming a family of four (or more) is a huge milestone. Newborn photoshoots offer an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate this beautiful transition in your family’s story. Showcasing your children’s unique personalities, and how they interact with each other are moments you will remember in your heart forever, and even sweeter when they can see the memories in a tangible way, too!

2. Choosing the Right Photographer for Your Family

When you’re planning a newborn photoshoot with a toddler, it’s essential to find a photographer who is not only skilled at capturing newborns but also knows how to work with toddlers. Here are a few things to look for when selecting the perfect photographer for your family:

  • Experience with Young Children: A photographer who specializes in newborns and toddlers will understand the best ways to keep both children comfortable during the session. They’ll know how to capture your toddler’s playful energy while still getting those precious, sleepy newborn moments.
  • Patience and Flexibility: A good family photographer will be patient and adaptable to the unpredictable nature of working with young children. From toddler tantrums to feeding breaks, they’ll make sure you feel at ease throughout the shoot.
  • Ability to Capture Candid Moments: While posed photos are important, candid moments are often the most authentic and heartwarming. Your photographer should have an eye for capturing these raw, natural interactions between your toddler and newborn.

These are three areas I absolutely love and thrive to be in. As a former Labor and Delivery nurse, a mom of 3, and experience in photographing families over the last decade…I’ve truly got you covered!

3. Preparing for Your Newborn Photoshoot with a Toddler

The key to a smooth and enjoyable newborn photoshoot with a toddler is preparation. Here are some tips to help things go as smoothly as possible:

1. Plan the Timing Wisely

  • Newborn’s Sleepy Window: Newborns typically sleep a lot in the first few weeks, and this is often the best time to capture those peaceful, serene photos. Ideally, schedule your newborn photoshoot within the first 7-14 days after birth, as babies are more likely to be in a deep sleep at this stage.
  • Toddler’s Schedule: Try to plan your session around your toddler’s nap or snack time to minimize crankiness. If possible, choose a time when your toddler is well-rested and in a good mood. I always advise skipping screen time pre-photoshoot!

2. Bring Snacks and Comfort Items for Your Toddler

Toddlers have short attention spans, and they may need something to keep them engaged during the session. Have a few of their favorite snacks, toys, or comfort items (like a blanket or stuffed animal) readily available. Having these little distractions on hand will help keep them calm and entertained.

3. Outfits for the Whole Family

  • Coordinating Outfits: Plan your outfits ahead of time to ensure everyone looks cohesive without being too matchy-matchy. Soft, neutral tones work well for newborn sessions, as they complement a wide range of backgrounds. For your toddler, keep comfort in mind—make sure they’ll feel happy in what they’re wearing and can move freely.

4. Relax and Stay Flexible

Children, especially toddlers, are unpredictable. It’s okay if things don’t go according to plan—take a deep breath and go with the flow. Your photographer will guide you through the session, and we are great at capturing those spontaneous moments that make your family unique.

4. What to Expect During Your Newborn Photoshoot with a Toddler

Now that you’re prepared, let’s go over what to expect during the photoshoot:

1. Start with the Details

Typically, I start with details of the baby’s nursery. This gives mom time to try on any dresses I brought, and do finishing touches. I’ve already wrapped the baby, and have dad rocking him or her to keep baby content. This gives your toddler time to get comfortable with the space and provides a good starting point for the shoot.

2. Involve the Toddler Gradually

After details, I’ll start with mom dad and baby. This usually gets toddler interested in what’s going on which is the perfect time to introduce your toddler into the shoot. I’ll start with full family photos, and then gradually move to some solo shots of your toddler with the baby, either holding hands, gently touching the baby’s head, or just sitting nearby. These intimate moments can be incredibly sweet and heartfelt.

3. Sibling Interactions

Once everyone is comfortable, the photographer will guide you through a few more family shots where you and your toddler can interact with your newborn. Whether it’s a tender moment between siblings or a playful interaction, the goal is to capture the connection between your toddler and your newborn in a way that feels natural and real.

4. Relaxed, Candid Moments

Don’t worry if your toddler gets a little fussy or distracted. These moments can make for some of the most authentic and heartfelt images. Your photographer will capture candid shots that show your family’s unique energy, from your toddler’s curiosity about their new sibling to your genuine moments of love.

         5. Newborn Focused

At the end of the session, typically the baby is in a deep sleep, cozy and wrapped! I send mom to go change into something more comfortable, and dad to relax or get the toddler a snack. I then take some close-up, peaceful photos of your newborn (swaddled, posed, or in natural positions). By the time I am done, everyone is back in cozy clothes, and baby is ready for a diaper change and a feeding! Which is my cue to pack up and celebrate your first family photos with the new baby being done!

Let’s Capture These Beautiful First Moments

A newborn photoshoot with a toddler doesn’t have to be stressful or overwhelming—it’s a wonderful opportunity to document the early moments of your growing family.
