Planning Your at Home Newborn Photos

Congratulations, Mama! Welcoming a newborn into your family is an extraordinary moment filled with love, joy, and countless memories waiting to be captured. As you navigate the whirlwind of parenthood, preserving these precious moments through photography becomes a cherished investment. In this blog post, tailored specifically for moms like you, we’ll explore everything you need to know about planning an in-home newborn session. From choosing the perfect photographer to creating a cozy and comfortable environment, let’s ensure that every detail is captured beautifully. We are featuring Theo’s GORGEOUS in home Newborn session for this post to give you real life examples!

Finding the Right Photographer:

Selecting the right photographer is the first step in creating timeless memories of your newborn. Research local photographers specializing in in-home sessions and browse through their portfolios to find a style that resonates with you. Look for photographers who have experience working with newborns and prioritize safety and comfort during shoots. Schedule consultations with your top choices to discuss your vision, ask questions, and ensure a good fit for your family. Loving their work and editing style is important! Your photographer will be a guiding light in planning your Newborn session!

Creating a Welcoming Environment:

Transform your home into the perfect backdrop for your newborn session by creating a cozy and welcoming environment. Consider factors such as lighting, temperature, and clutter-free spaces. I recommend to my clients to choose two spaces to have clear of clutter and photo worthy. This is often the Nursery if they have one set up already, and either the master bedroom or a main room like the living room or kitchen. Any space you choose- be sure to declutter and tidy up the areas where the session will take place, focusing on rooms with ample natural light. Add personal touches such as blankets, pillows, and nursery decor to infuse warmth and personality into your photos.

Selecting Outfits and Props:

Choosing the right outfits and props can elevate your newborn session and add that touch of YOU in to the photos. Opt for soft, neutral-colored clothing that compliments your home’s aesthetic and allows your baby’s natural beauty to shine through. Consider incorporating meaningful props such as heirloom blankets, stuffed animals, or sentimental items to add a personal touch to your photos. Coordinate outfits for family members participating in the session to create cohesive and visually appealing portraits. I send all of my clients a newborn style guide to help with this process, as well as have a client closet of beautiful, neutral dresses for clients to wear, as a complimentary service. You have enough to worry about, and I want to help make this process as stress free as possible.

Timing and Scheduling:

Timing is key when scheduling your in-home newborn session to capture those fleeting moments of newborn bliss. Plan your session during your baby’s first two weeks when they are still sleepy and easily posed. Coordinate with your photographer to find a time that works best for your family’s schedule, taking into account feedings, naps, and any other considerations. Be flexible and prepared for unexpected changes, understanding that newborns operate on their own timetable! I generally recommend for lighting in most homes that we start your session at 9 AM. Lighting is ideal in the morning, as well as baby nap schedules, and toddler/ sibling schedules. If you have a toddler or two as well, read on for the next tips!

Preparing Older Siblings and Pets:

If you have older siblings or pets, involving them in the newborn session can create heartwarming and memorable moments. Prepare older siblings by explaining the importance of gentle behavior around the baby and involving them in the planning process. Consider incorporating activities or games to keep them engaged and cooperative during the session. Having a helper present, like grandma or auntie is also super helpful for when toddlers need a photo break or extra snuggles as you are getting photos with you and baby. For pets, ensure they are well-behaved and comfortable around the newborn, and enlist the help of a trusted family member or friend to assist with handling and supervision.

Relaxing and Enjoying the Moment:

Above all, remember to relax and enjoy the experience of capturing these precious moments with your newborn. Trust in the expertise of your photographer and allow yourself to be present in the moment, soaking in the love and joy that surrounds you. Embrace the imperfections and unpredictability of parenthood, knowing that these authentic moments will be cherished for years to come.

Planning your in-home newborn session is an exciting journey filled with love, anticipation, and beautiful memories in the making. By following these tips, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience that results in stunning photos capturing the essence of your growing family. Embrace this magical chapter of motherhood, knowing that each photograph is a timeless treasure celebrating the love and bond you share with your newborn.

PS…Wondering if your photographer can take studio style images in your home? I bring a “studio to you” set up, where I take solo images of your baby, where we let all their darling details shine, and keep the rest of the image simple. This helps your baby be the center of attention! Definitely ask your photographer if they offer this service if you are looking for images like Theo’s solo photos shown here.
