4 Tips to Planning a California Beaches Travel Photoshoot

California’s stunning coastline offers a picturesque backdrop for a memorable travel photoshoot. Planning a trip to the beaches of California is a perfect time to get professional photos done! Whether you are celebrating an Anniversary like the Couple shown here, an extended family session, or you’re on a babymoon and want your Maternity Photos Oceanside- planning is key to ensuring your photoshoot goes smoothly. Below are my best tips to help you plan a perfect beach photoshoot in California.

1. Choosing the Right Location: The California coast has a variety of beaches, each with its own unique charm and vibes. From the iconic Venice Beach in Los Angeles to the serene landscapes of Big Sur, consider what kind of scenery aligns with your vision. Research different locations based on accessibility of your group, Size of group, crowd levels at the beach, and the aesthetic you want to achieve! Some beaches are more picturesque than others!

2. Timing is Everything: The golden hours—just after sunrise and before sunset—offer the best natural lighting for photography. Plan your shoot around these times to capture warm, soft light that enhances the beauty of the beach and naturally flatters skin tones! Skip mid day to avoid squinty eyes, and the heat of the day!

3. Permits and Regulations: Some beaches in California require permits for professional photoshoots. Check the local regulations beforehand to avoid any surprises on the day of your shoot. Additionally, be mindful of environmental rules to preserve the beauty of these natural landscapes. Hire a professional Photographer- they’ll look up the permits, and make the process much easier for you!

4. Wardrobe makes a huge impact: Select outfits that complement the beach setting. Flowing dresses, natural tones, boho beachwear, or even formal attire against the backdrop of crashing waves can create a beautiful contrast and images that really bring that WOW factor. I send all of my clients a Wardrobe style guide to help plan and coordinate your outfits!

5. BONUS TIP

Choose a WEEKDAY Session, and plan your photoshoot for EARLY on your trip!: Weekdays are FAR less busy at the beach and will help you avoid the crowd, get a closer parking spot, and have a little privacy/ ability to move around to get a variety of backdrops!

Be sure to schedule your session within the first couple of days of your trip…BEFORE YOU SUNBURN or get unflattering tan lines from bathing suits. You want to remember the scenery, the cute outfits, the connection you share…not your tan lines or sunburns 😉
