Booking a Romantic Desert Photoshoot in Arizona? Here are some tips for you while planning your session, straight from a Scottsdale, Arizona Photographer!
Time of Year: If your session is not time sensitive- the best time of year to photograph outdoors in Arizona is Fall, Winter or Spring. Avoid the summer months if you can, due to the heat! If you have a time sensitive session need such as visiting from another area, maternity, proposal, etc- and you need to have your session in the Summer, consider photographing at either Sunrise or right at Sunset hours. Not only is the light glowy and gorgeous during both of these times, it’s also a lot cooler. Especially at Sunrise!!
Desert Locations: When booking a desert photoshoot, think through what TYPE of Desert scenery you are wanting. That might seem silly, but there really are different desert vibes! If you want towering Saguaros- be sure to let your photographer know that. Or you may prefer more of an open desert vibe, with no saguaros but still desert tones. Love the look of large boulders? Mountain views? Prickly pears over Saguaros. Red rock desert? There really are more desert scenery options than you might originally think- so no matter what you desire, be sure to communicate that with your photographer so they can guide you on the best locations for you!
Prepping for a Desert Photoshoot: No matter the time of year- HYDRATION is key. Prehydrate the day before and the day of! Bring water with you to the session and an extra frozen one in a cooler in the car for after. Choose clothing that is better at concealing sweat stains if you will be out in the desert during the warmer months- such as light colors and earth tones. For the Men: wear an undershirt that you are comfortable in for the walk to the photo spot, and swap into your photoshoot shirt once your photographer is ready to start the session- especially if you are in the warm months or are wearing formal attire/sweaters etc.
Ladies- wear comfortable shoes to walk to the photoshoot location in, and then swap into your photoshoot shoes! This helps with comfort AND keeps your shoes dirt free. If you have little’s- put them in their outfits when you arrive, and if they have any sort of outerwear, carry it until you get to the photoshoot spot and then put it on! Bring baby wipes in case they get shoes dirty on the walk, and lots of water and snacks!
