Planning a family photo session can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially in a stunning location like Sedona, Arizona. With its breathtaking red rock formations and scenic landscapes, Sedona provides the perfect backdrop for capturing precious family moments. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the entire process, from booking to the day of the shoot, ensuring that your experience is enjoyable and stress-free!
Step 1: Booking Your Photographer (At Least 3 Months in Advance)
Why Start Early?
The sooner you book, the more options you’ll have for dates and times, especially during peak seasons (spring and fall), and ESPECIALLY if you need a Weeknd Session, or if you are visiting specific dates on vacation 😉
What to Consider:
- Research: Look for photographers who specialize in family photography in Sedona. Review their portfolios and read client testimonials! (don’t forget to also leave your photographer a Google review!)
- Contact: Reach out to your top choices. Ask about availability, pricing, and packages.
- Book: Once you find the perfect photographer, secure your date asap!
Step 2: Choose the Perfect Location (1-2 Months in Advance)
Popular Locations in Sedona:
- Red Rock State Park: Gorgeous landscapes with vibrant red rock formations.
- Oak Creek Canyon: Lush greenery and serene water scenes.
- Cathedral Rock: Iconic views that provide a dramatic backdrop.
- If you are working with me, I have many locations I love to photograph in Sedona, and I talk through them with you and your vision, and family personality!
Tip: Consider your family’s personality. Do you prefer a more adventurous setting, or something serene and picturesque? Discuss location options with your photographer. Keep in mind that some places are busier than others, and parking can be tricky. There is also a shuttle system now in place in Sedona, so plan accordingly with your photographer to ensure you arrive at the location on time!
Step 3: Outfit Planning (3-4 Weeks in Advance)
What to Wear:
- Color Palette: Choose colors that complement the natural landscape. Earthy tones, neutrals, and soft hues work well in Sedona.
- Coordinate, Don’t Match: Select outfits that harmonize without being too uniform. Mixing textures and layers adds visual interest.
- Comfort: Ensure everyone feels comfortable and confident in their clothing.
Tip: Lay out outfits in advance to see how they look together! Bring easy to walk/hike in shoes and swap shoes at the location to keep them clean (red dirt y’all!), and save your ankles!
Step 4: Preparing for the Session (1 Week in Advance)
Finalize Details:
- Confirm the Date and Time: Touch base with your photographer if they haven’t already sent you reminders to confirm logistics. I tend to over communicate with my clients…type A personality over here!
- Weather Check: Keep an eye on the forecast. Sedona weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for changes.
- Gather Props: If you’d like to include any personal items (like a favorite blanket or toy to catch your little’s attention), have them ready.
Tip: Ensure everyone has a healthy snack before the session, and lots of water to keep spirits high. If you’re not from Arizona, it’s really important to bring lots of water with you as well! Even in early Fall it can be in the high 90’s, and if it’s sunny out, it feels warmer than that!
Step 5: The Day of the Session
What to Expect:
- Arrival: Plan to arrive early to allow for traffic, waiting for parking, and walking to the photoshoot spot.
- Warm-Up: A good photographer will take some time to get everyone comfortable in front of the camera. Don’t rush this part—it’s key for natural, candid shots, especially with little’s!
- Posing and Fun: If you’re working with me you can expect a mix of prompted and candid shots! I will guide you through prompts occasionally, but also capture genuine interactions of your family, and your personalities!
Tip: Let any stress go. Your kids follow your lead- so if you’re stress free, fun, and full of joy, they will follow, and it will show in your images! Just let it all go- and let yourselves just BE.
Step 6: After the Session
What Happens Next:
- Editing: Your photographer will edit the images to enhance colors and details. This usually takes a few weeks, but your photographer will give you a general timeline in their contract of what to expect!
- Viewing and Selection: Most photographers will provide an online gallery where you can view and select your favorite images.
- Printing Options: Discuss options for prints, albums, or digital downloads. Many photographers offer professional printing services to ensure the best quality, and match the color tones of the edits- since that is one of the main reasons you chose YOUR photographer- you love their style!
