Pregnancy is such a beautiful chapter—but let’s be honest, it can feel a little overwhelming, especially when you’re chasing a toddler while growing a baby. If you’re expecting and dreaming about a maternity session that celebrates this new season (without the stress), I see you—and I’ve got you covered.
As a motherhood photographer and mama myself, I specialize in storytelling sessions that are natural, gentle, and full of emotion. Whether you’re 30 weeks along or just starting to plan, here are my best tips for planning a maternity session that feels just right for this season of your life.
When Should You Schedule Your Maternity Photos?
The sweet spot for maternity photos is typically between 28–32 weeks. Your belly is visible and beautiful, but you’re usually still feeling comfortable enough to move, play with your toddler, and enjoy the session.
If you’re including your toddler, earlier in that window can help avoid the extra fatigue that sometimes creeps in during the last few weeks of pregnancy.
What to Wear (That Works for Bumps and Toddlers!)
Choose something that makes you feel beautiful and lets you move freely. Flowy dresses work beautifully for maternity photos—especially in Arizona’s dreamy desert light + warm weather—and they make it easy to sit, snuggle, or chase your toddler between shots.
Tips for outfits:
-Stick to neutrals or earth tones these tones photograph well.
-Dress your toddler in something comfortable and timeless—think textures, linen, or cotton.
-Avoid bold patterns, characters, or logos to keep the focus on connection.

Choosing the Right Location
Arizona is full of stunning backdrops—from soft desert landscapes and golden hour light to grassy river spots or epic Sedona red rocks.
When you have a toddler in the mix, I always recommend locations that are:
-Easily walkable (no long hikes or rocky terrain)
-Safe for little ones to explore
-Naturally beautiful without needing props or setups
Let’s keep it simple—kids thrive when they’re comfortable and free to be themselves.
Prepping Your Toddler for the Session
You might be worried about whether your toddler will “cooperate.” But here’s the good news: they don’t have to. Your session isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection.
Here’s how to prep:
-Talk about it ahead of time so they know it’s something special.
-Bring snacks and water, lots of snacks.
-Pack a favorite small toy or comfort item to help them feel secure, or snag their attention.
-Let go of expectations—we’ll play, cuddle, explore, and capture moments as they unfold.
As a photographer who works with little ones all the time, I come ready with patience, prompts, and tricks to keep the mood light and the experience joyful. I also encourage frequent breaks where your little one’s can take a rest, and not be in front of the camera. Have a snack, water, and play for a few minutes until they are ready to rejoin!
Why This Session Matters
You’re not just taking photos to document your pregnancy—you’re telling the story of your family as it grows. Including your toddler in your maternity session is such a beautiful way to celebrate their role as big sibling and preserve this once-in-a-lifetime chapter.
These photos become keepsakes for you—to remember the way your baby bump felt with tiny hands resting on it—and for your children, to see how deeply they were loved before they ever arrived.
Ready to Plan Your Session?
If you’re a mama looking for organic, storytelling maternity photos in Arizona, I’d love to create something beautiful with you. I’ll guide you every step of the way—from styling and location to gently leading your toddler through the session.
Because motherhood deserves to be remembered. Not just the big moments—but the quiet, real, and heart-filled ones, too.
