If you’re pregnant during an Arizona summer, you already know how intense the heat can get—but that doesn’t mean you have to skip your maternity photos or settle for an indoor session. One of the most beautiful (and refreshing!) ways to capture this season of your life is with a maternity session by the water.
Amanda + Josh’s maternity session along the River was everything I love about photographing motherhood: golden light filtering through the trees, the quiet flow of the water, and a daddy that dearly loves his mama-to-be glowing in the most effortless, organic way.

Why Choose a River Maternity Session?
Cool, Comfortable, and Magical:
When temperatures climb into the triple digits, the last thing you want is to be wrapped in a flowy dress in the middle of the desert, with no shade around. River sessions offer a naturally cooler environment—think shade, breezes, and the refreshing feel of water on your feet. It’s the perfect way to feel comfortable while still getting dreamy, storytelling photos.
A Unique Arizona Backdrop:
Arizona is best known for its desert landscapes, but not everyone knows how stunning our rivers and lakes can be. The contrast of lush greenery and soft water with the surrounding desert makes for breathtaking images that feel both wild and serene.
Timeless, Organic Moments:
Water encourages movement—barefoot walks through the shallows, playful splashes, quiet moments with your hands on your belly. These sessions are less about posing and more about presence, which creates truly authentic keepsake images you’ll treasure.
What to Wear for a Maternity Session by the Water
I always recommend flowing dresses, dresses in soft neutrals or muted tones that complement the natural landscape. Barefoot is best for river sessions- though I do recommend bringing shoes that are easy to walk in, and that can get wet/muddy. You will wear these into the water and hand them to me once you are in a comfortable, stable, safe space. I provide client wardrobe options and styling guidance to help you feel confident and beautiful! If neutrals aren’t your vibe, jewel and earth tones are also absolutely stunning on camera (as shown with Amanda, looking fire in her deep red dress).
Best Time for Water Maternity Photos in Arizona
Late afternoon and early evening offer the most flattering light, especially in summer when the sun sets later. I typically book water sessions for about two hours before sunset- when the need for a cooler location is highest— or right at sunrise if you are wanting to avoid the heat of the day even more! The light is just as stunning and the weather is about 20 degrees cooler at sunrise 🙂
If you’re expecting this summer and dreaming of maternity photos that feel natural, beautiful, and a little adventurous—let’s talk. River sessions are one of my favorite ways to celebrate this season of motherhood, and I’d be honored to capture it for you.
